The production of The Singing Detective was notable for its use of vintage equipment. Hulsman used a Commodore Amiga computer and a tracker to combine sounds from a Roland TR-909 drum machine, an Alpha Juno synthesizer, and a Roland sampler. The song was recorded in 1996 at Point44 studio in Haarlem, Netherlands, and was remastered from the original DAT tape for its 2022 reissue.
